1.Natural Fibers/Plant Fibers
The first rule of buying environmentally friendly knitting yarn is to find the following yarns.
- Natural fiber. Synthetic/man-made fibers are made of oil and many chemicals and should be avoided.
- lt is biodegradable, which means that if it is put in a compost pile or trash bin, the yarn will decompose into compost.
- Shopping locally. lf possible, it is best to buy yarn locally to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during transportation.
- Look for GOTs certified yarn. GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard.
- The recycled yarn can be recycled to avoid some of the synthetic fibers being landfilled.
Are all natural fibers sustainable?
Natural fibers sound sustainable, but is this always right? No, unfortunately, it is not. Natural fibers can be coated with plastic to make them softer.
Plant fibers such as cotton and bamboo usually grow with insecticides that damage the earth, pollute water sources and harm wildlife and humans. Cotton usually comes from plants that have been treated with GMO (transgenic organisms).
Animal fibers and plant fibers are usually washed with chemicals and dyed with chemicals that may be harmful to workers and consumers.
However, looking for 100% natural yarn is a good start!
2. Biodegradable Yarn
If the yarn contains 100% natural fibers, it should be biodegradable. Unfortunately, fibers are usually washed and dyed with chemicals, which makes the yarn unsuitable for composting because the chemicals can contaminate soil and water.
3. Recycled Yarn
It is always better to choose recycled yarns than yarns produced from scratch. It saves some synthetic materials from our landfill and gives them a second life.
4. Synthetic Fiber or Artificial Fiber
The production of synthetic fibers uses a lot of oil. Because the fiber is made of petrochemicals. Petrochemical products are chemical products derived from petroleum. This is not good at all because oil is a non-renewable source and the manufacture of synthetic fibers also pollutes water and air.
Semi-synthetic fibers are made from regenerated cellulose fibers. Cellulose fibers usually come from different types of wood, and during the treatment process, they will be contaminated with irritating chemicals, polluting water, air, soil and hurting workers.
